A caesarean section is major abdominal surgery and the scar it leaves deserves expert care and attention. Having a C-section can take a huge toll on the body - physically and emotionally- and for some women, the scar can affect the clothes they wear, intimacy with their partner, returning to exercise and simply moving with confidence again.
A caesarean incision passes through seven layers of tissue including skin, subcutaneous fat, fascia, abdominal muscles (though these are separated and not cut) and the uterus, with each layer needing to heal in turn. The scar tissue that forms is not as strong or flexible as healthy skin which is why issues with skin function, comfort and appearance can arise.
As healing progresses, adhesions can form – fibrous bands of scar tissue can develop between internal structures such as the uterus, abdominal wall, bladder or bowel, causing pain, restricted movement and bladder symptoms.
Following an episiotomy or tear, scar tissue layers can become tight as the wound heals and cause discomfort during intercourse and daily activities.
Scar therapy is about supporting healing, restoring movement and helping your scar feel more comfortable over time.
Specialist techniques to improve tissue flexibility, breakdown adhesions, increase blood flow and restore movement around the scar.
Targeted techniques to address nerve sensitivity, reducing hypersensitivity and improving tolerance to touch and clothing.
Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles, improving bladder control and core stability.
Gentle massage to soften scar tissue and improve elasticity once the wound has healed.
Advice on use of silicone bands and scar creams to help promote healing.
Your first appointment is a 60 minute consultation. Assessment and treatment designed to feel unhurried and supportive.
Your assessment will include a full history of your pregnancy and birth. The scar will be assessed in terms of its appearance, texture, sensitivity and mobility. Posture and movement checks will take place. The abdominals will be checked for any presence of diastasis recti, and the pelvic floor muscles will be screened.
Treatment may include scar mobilisation and massage to improve tissue flexibility and breakdown adhesions and restore movement. Desensitisation to reduce nerve sensitivity and improve tolerance to touch. Core and bladder rehabilitation as needed, and advice on silicon therapy and scar creams as appropriate. A home programme will also be given with instructions on self massage and scar therapy as appropriate, scar products and exercises to support recovery between appointments.
Every scar and every recovery is different. Your physiotherapist will review your progress at each appointment and adjust your plan accordingly.
I initially visited Vicky Carey for a "Mummy MOT". She was professional and very knowledgeable about post C-section recovery. I regularly attended sessions, and she helped me achieve my goals of returning to running and skiing.

I would like to thank Vicky Carey not just for her professional physio treatment but also for her positive encouragement at every stage of the process. I highly recommend Vicky for her specialism in post natal (in my case, 10 years post natal!) matters.

I highly recommend Vicky for postnatal issues. I had a number of sessions with her for a prolapse post birth and she was absolutely brilliant. Very knowledgeable and very thorough. I have seen a huge improvement in my symptoms to the point that they are virtually non-existent and am now back to running safely.

Here comes my overdue review about Vicky. I had the privilege to see her more than 10 times - never thought I would enjoy going to a medical session but I did! I’ve experienced changes from barely moving about (postnatal) to now feeling like myself. Thanks to Vicky. I couldn’t recommend her more and she is wonderful, professional and knowledgeable!

I came to Vicky Carey for specialist women's health physiotherapy, to help manage chronic pain from fibromyalgia and pregnancy. I can honestly say that Vicky has made a remarkable difference. She is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and genuinely invested in her patients' progress. From the very first session, I felt completely at ease in her care. Vicky took the time to understand my various conditions and tailored her approach accordingly, both for hands-on treatment and prescribed exercises. Though I practice a little yoga, the bespoke (and very gentle) exercise plan and treatments she has provided have improved my symptoms significantly, and I continue to reap the benefits. As my needs will continue to change through pregnancy, I won't hesitate to book a session with Vicky to help me manage pain and mobility as my body changes. I'm also looking forward to booking the Mummy MOT once the little one arrives!

Just had my first session with Vicky and I am very happy about it. I've been having pelvic pain and other issues since my endometriosis surgery and she was absolutely incredible! We spoke about my case, drafted a personalized treatment plan and she did a nice blend of assessment and hands on treatment. I look forward to seeing the results of her work 💪🏻

I visited Vicky for a Mummy MOT 6-weeks after having my little girl. I felt disappointed by my GP postnatal follow-up and wanted a more thorough examination and a plan to return safely to the activities I loved (running, cycling, pilates, etc.). Vicky provided just that and rebuilt my self-confidence. 6-months later and I reached my goal of running 24km along the Jurassic Coast. Progress felt slow at first, but I'm so happy with the outcome.

Vicky has been amazing helping me through postpartum recovery. The Mommy MOT is a very thorough evaluation with practical advice on recovery. The follow up sessions have been very useful and I also learnt what I can do on my own at home to sustain recovery.

You can usually begin scar therapy around six weeks after birth, once there is no infection, all stitches have healed and there are no open areas. Indirect techniques can sometimes be used earlier. You should also feel emotionally ready there’s no rush and the treatment is always paced around you.
No. C-section massage is a gentle treatment. If your scar feels sensitive, numb or uncomfortable, everything is adapted to suit you. Treatment is always guided by how your body feels on the day and nothing is done without your full consent.
You should only touch your scar when you feel ready. Your physiotherapist will guide you gently and safely, and only suggest self-care techniques if and when appropriate. Many women feel unsure at first and this is completely OK. Support is always paced around you.
Yes. Itchiness, tingling and numbness are common as the scar and surrounding nerves heal. Scar massage, alongside the right products and hydration advice, can help reduce irritation and support healthier tissue recovery.
Many women describe a pulling or tight sensation around their scar, which can sometimes lead to discomfort elsewhere in the body – such as the chest back or pelvic floor. This is often related to the way the scar tissue and connective tissue heal beneath the skin. Scar massage helps by gently softening these restrictions, improving movement and reducing discomfort over time.
No, even old scars can benefit from treatment. Scar tissue can respond well to mobilisation and desensitisation techniques regardless of how long ago the birth took place. It’s never too late to seek help.
Our Women’s Health Assessment will thoroughly assess your scar and provide appropriate scar therapy to help you recover well.
