Frequently Asked Questions

Why does back pain happen during pregnancy?
A combination of factors cause back pain in pregnancy – postural changes occur as the centre gravity moves increasingly forward, hormonal changes (especially relaxin) causes loosening of the ligaments on the spinal joints and a weakened core – all contribute to its onset affecting up to 70% of pregnant women.
Pelvic girdle pain is pain around the sacroiliac joints and/or the pubic symphysis joint at the front of the pelvis. It is caused by increased mobility of the pelvic joints due to the hormone relaxin softening the joints. It affects approximately 20% of pregnant women.

For most women yes, the symptoms resolve post birth or within weeks postpartum. Seeing a pelvic health physiotherapist can significantly speed up recovery.

Fluid retention (oedema) compresses the median nerve in the wrist, It occurs most commonly in the third trimester and affects up to 35% the pregnant women.

It is often managed through a combination of wrist splints, worn especially at night, avoiding repetitive wrist movements and elevating the hands when resting. It often resolves after delivery.

Round ligament pain is a sharp, brief stabbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen or groin and it is caused by stretching of the ligament supporting the uterus. It is very common in the second trimester. It is a normal pregnancy symptom. However, persistent, severe or one sided pain should always be evaluated to rule out other causes.
